A Fly in the Ointment?

There's currently a bit of a wrinkle in the Asatour 2004 plans. It may not be a problem at all, but we'll see.

Here's the synopsis, from the top:

1. I was told that they wanted me to take an assignment in Korea. I turned it down, saying I needed some time in the States.
2. I was told that since I refused Korea, there would probably be no assignments available until August, as there was nothing available in the States. I told them I was fine with that, and actually wanted that much time off, as I was planning on a big road trip.

(that's the extremely short version)

NOW, I've been told that they want me to go to Fort Drum, NY as soon as I'm legally able to go back to work, around June 3rd. This after I'd been told August, agreed to August, and made plans until... yes, August.

A bit of a balancing act is required now. On the one hand, I can't get fired, as I can't take a summer-long road trip if I don't have a job to go back to afterward. However, on the other hand, I don't wish to go back to work in early June. I have got to find a way to say "no" without getting the entire door slammed in my face, which could be tricky. I don't know yet if my coordinator has pulled strings to get me this assignment or if it has been suggested by higher-ups. If she's pulled strings, then at worst I'll look ungrateful. If it's the higher-ups, then I might look like I no longer want my job.

I'm going to call her as soon as I can get ahold of her, and barring that I will be seeing her next week when we go to National Headquarters on the way home. I'm really looking forward to Asatour 2004, so don't give up on me yet! But I've gotta make sure that I"m taking care of me for after Asatour as well.
