Asatour: Um... Kemet

The ancient Egyptians, if I recall correctly, named their country Kemet. And that's where I am. Really.

I flew here beginning on Monday, with my parents, who are avid overseas travelers, usually (and especially in this case) by guided tour. We flew from Nashville to Washington, from Washington to Frankfurt, and from Frankfurt to Cairo. We got really lucky there -- I'll probably post later in The Angry Heathen About the evils of airline overbooking. We did get on our expected plane, though, and arrived, happy but exhausted in Cairo.

Flying in, I was lucky enough to be on the side of the plane that got an aerial view of the pyramids. I know you THINK you know how big these things are, but you don't. You can't conceive it until you see huge enormous structures surrounded by tiny 9-story hotels. Amazing and beautiful. Later I'll post about today, when I actually went inside Kefr's pyramid.

We had a wild ride through Cairo by bus to our hotel, where I am right now. We enjoyed the sights, and mom was particularly amused by the driving over here -- for those of you who can relate, it's like driving in Korea, China, or to a lesser degree, Italy. We rode along many canals, and my enjoyment of this landscape feature was dimmed only slightly by the dead donkeys and dead dog floating in one of them. :)

This hotel is amazing. Unfortunately, so are the prices on the internet service... 3.90 Egyptian pounds per minute. Luckily, Egyptian pounds now share nothing in common with their British counterparts -- it takes 5.18 Egyptian pounds to make one dollar. Still, paying by the minute will mean I'm not posting very much. I'll do my best to still write, and take photos, and will post them when I can.
