A Re-enactment of Hitchcock's The Birds

Greetings from... a train! Again, I find myself whiling away the hours (well, hour, anyway) before my next stop by typing out my experiences here. I've left Venice, and I'm heading, in a roundabout fashion, toward Firenze for my last night in Italy.

Venice was nice. I walked around a lot and just looked at stuff. I didn't take as many pictures as you may expect, but then, I'm getting tired. It's been a long, strange trip.

While in Venice, I did not ride in a gondola. It seemed to me to be more of a romantic thing, and since I was alone, I figured it would be a waste of a perfectly good boat. I did, of course take the Vaporetto from the train station and back, so that was nice... well, it was crowded and bumpy, but still nice.

I visited San Marcos several times -- the square with the big Eastern-style church and all the pigeons, and I paid my 1 Euro for some corn to feed the pigeons. It was gone pretty fast; before you could say "Human-Avian Influenza" I was covered in flying rats, trying to get at what was in my hand. I'd at least had the foresight to put on a bandana before this, but as soon as I was done I made a beeline for the closest public restroom (spending another Euro to get inside) to wash my hands and arms.

The best part of my visit to Venice, though, was getting to see my good friend Carlos -- we were in Afghanistan together. We had a nice dinner on the Grand Canal by the Rialto Bridge, and managed to catch up somewhat. He also brought along two of his friends, so we made a nice full table.

All this, and rampant consumerism! I managed to find a pretty good deal on some crystal glasses to go with my dishes. They're being shipped home, because the concept of carrying them in my luggage made me pale.

So now I'm trying to get to Firenze (Florence). I didn't bother with the ticket line this morning, and just hopped on a train to Verona, because based on the map it appeared it would be easy to catch a train from Verona to Firenze, and there were no direct trains from the station I was at to Firenze. This was a mistake. Had I bothered to take my trip notebook out of my backpack I would have seen that all I needed to do was go to one of the land-based Venice stations -- Mieste -- and catch a direct train to Firenze. I am now headed back from Verona to Venice to catch that train. But at least I had a nice sandwich and Pringles in Verona.

That's all for now! You'll have to hold out a little longer for details of the last night, and the trip home.
