Asatour: Next Stop, Rome

This morning I bid a fond farewell to Torre del Tartufo, and took a van down to the train station to catch the train to Rome.

Yesterday was the last of our four days of cooking courses, and I was on the two-person team for the main course. The challenge for this day was that we were also making things for the first night for the next class, which will be arriving today. I helped make wild boar stew with polenta, and for the new group, chicken liver pate'. The wild boar had been marinating in red wine for two days, and was quite... aromatic. In all honesty I thought the smell was going to put my 7-months pregnant partner into labor.

Working backwards, the day before was our free day. I caught a ride down to Arezzo, and spent most of the day wandering around and window-shopping. I found lots of windows, but didn't end up buying any of them. Had a nice lunch of ravioli in bolognese sauce, visited the archaeological museum and the ancient Roman amphitheater, and hung out in some piazzas. It was good to do some walking, and have the chance to start burning off some of those four-course meals.

I leave Torre del Tartufo with one pasta crimper, an apron, several cookbooks, two bottles of wine, a bottle of limoncello, a jar of reduced balsamic vinegar and a jar of truffle paste. Luggage is getting heavier, but if it gets too bad I can always drink the wine!

I'm now on the train, and should be in Rome in a couple of hours. I had scheduled a tour for this afternoon -- a Crypts and Catacombs tour, but doubt I will make it there in time, since my train arrives around 2:30, I have to then find and check into a hotel to drop off my luggage, and then get to the proper meeting place for the tour by 3:30. Yeah, that's not happening. I do, however, have several other tours lined up throughout the next couple of days, so I'm not worried. When on a trip like this I find it's best to appreciate what you do see and not dwell on regrets of what you may miss along the way.
