Asatour: Florence

Greetings from Florence! I'm in my hotel room, and will be checking out in an hour or so.

I arrived here two days ago on a small, loaded airplane. The Swedish girl beside me became the first person I've ever seen to use an airsick bag -- she totally blew away any future competition in this category by using two of them. After picking up my bag and strolling through customs, I grabbed a taxi and came to the hotel. The rest of Friday afternoon I napped, watched TV, and had dinner -- prosciutto crudo with bread and asparagus cheesecake.

On Saturday, I took a tour of Florence, for a while. We first took a bus up into the hills overlooking the city, and learned a smattering about Etruscan culture -- the original inhabitants of this part of Italy, decimated or assimilated by the Romans. We then went walking through the city, and saw the places you can see in the photo gallery.

I stayed with the tour until the Uffizi museum and gallery. We had a new tour guide there, who replaced the guy who had been so interesting in the streets, explaining the significance of various statues, frescoes, and architectural feats. The museum lady was, to me, dull. Let me explain, however, that I'm not a big art history person. I like looking at art, but my interest goes only slightly further than "Ooh, pretty." I do like examining the elements of a piece, and trying to find any hidden meanings in it. I don't however, like to compare endless examples of the same type of photo from different periods of time, so by the time we reached the third room brimming with self-satisfied looking virgins holding their angelic offspring, I was bored. I ditched the tour and wandered around the museum on my own. Unfortunately, photos weren't allowed inside the Uffizi, so you'll only see one picture from their in the photos, since I hadn't been told yet.

I rather enjoyed the Uffizi, but mainly because I spent the rest of the time trying not to run into my spurned tour group. Great fun.

Today I travel on to Arrezo, to attend cooking school at Torre del Tartufo. More from there, hopefully!
