Asatour 06: Beware acl the clamas on the hiclside.

Greetings from Llandudno, Wales!

Llandudno is, of course, a Welsh word, but I have learned how to properly pronounce it. It's like clan-tith-no, basically; double l's are pronounced like "cl" and the "u" in "dud" is actually somewhere in between "i" and "u." The name actually means "Parish of St. Dudno."

I don't want to over-travelogue the place, but it's basically a Victorian seaside tourist town. Very old-fashioned, and rather chilly in late August. It rained most of the time I was here, as you can see from my pictures, posted in my albums.

Llandudno has huge rocks on either side of the beach -- The Big Orme and the Little Orme. These were actually named by the Vikings (and Orme loosely translates as "sea monster." As you can see in the photos, the Big Orme does look sort of like a reptilian head from the right angle. Sort of. Kind of. If you squint and close one eye and balance sideways on one foot... yeah.

Anyway, it's full of old copper mines.

I was a little apprehensive about coming here -- afraid I'd found the seaside town that they forgot to close down from "Every Day is Like Sunday." Nice, pleasant place, though. Lots of touristy shops, and it's close to the walled Roman city of Conwy, but I'll get to that shortly.

I was supposed to stay in a hostel here. It looked nice -- big white house with lots of potted plants out front. The front door was locked, and I decided they must be gone to lunch, so I sat down to wait...

...and I got the strangest feeling. I hate calling it this, because it's very new-agey sounding, but the place gave me a bad vibe. I considered briefly; I had put down a 10 pound deposit on the room -- that's all I would be out if I left right then -- and so I did just that.I picked up my bags and walked toward the hotels.

I tried one place, which was all booked up, but recommended another place to me, which was not, by any stretch of the imagination cheap. They did, however, have rooms, and no vibes. I paid what seems like way too much for a room, from an American perspective, but British hotels aren't like American hotels. My room reservation included dinner, bed and breakfast, and I ended up in a fifth floor room with a balcony. The dinners are amazing -- basically with the room price you get two courses plus drinks, and for about 4 pounds you can add dessert. Tonight, for example, I had poached salmon with new potatoes and onions as an appetizer, followed by roast duck with summer squash, wilted cabbage, and summer vegetables. I skipped dessert, but last night I had blueberry ripple cheescake. Breakfast is a fully cooked affair, rather than a continental thing, although they do include a cereal bar -- this past mOrmeing I skipped the hot stuff and just had meuslix and Wheetabix with apple juice. Anyway, the point is that all this comes with the room, and considering the quality of the food it's not such a bad deal after all (It's still expensive, and if I'd known how much more it was going to be I might have stayed in the hostile hostel after all, but I have no regrets).

Anyway, in my photos galleries you can also see the pics I took at Conwy castle (Con-ree) and also on and of the city walls. The castle was built in the 1200's at the order of Edward I, and was completed in 4 years.

It's been a nice, relaxing few days, and it's given me a chance to recover from a cold that developed in Scotland. I'm just about completely over that now, and ready to travel tomorrow to COrmewall, to the city of Newton Abbot. Still lots more to see, and hopefully lots more pictures.

Ya'll take care. Post me some comments and let me know what's going on in your worlds!
