Just... Wow.

Simply an amazing day. I'm not much for seeking spiritual enlightenment through bliss, but today, I was there.

Today, in case the chronology has escaped you, was my day to raft the Grand Canyon.

Just to make this clear from the start, I have NOTHING but good things to say about the Hualapai River Runners, and strongly advise any of you who are passing through Arizona to take a day for this amazing and economical adventure.

We gathered at 7:30, got briefed and headed down into the Canyon. The Hualapai, incidentally, happen to have the only road that leads down to the bottom of the Canyon. We were assigned to rafts, jacketed up, separated out our stuff to stay dry from the rest, and hit the river.

The rafts were kind of like pontoons -- two inflatable heavy rubber sections, pointed at the front, supporting a metal box where everyone sat, with two motors in the back. We had 9 people in our boat, including the guide, who was amazing at navigating us through the rapids, telling us the history of the area, and keeping us supplied with drinks and snacks.

Just about 500 feet down, we hit our first rapids, and we started out with Class 4. I went right down into the bottom of the boat, a place I got very familiar with. Y'see, being 6'2 and 230 pounds, and being in the very front of the boat I had to lower my center of gravity to keep from being pitched out. The rapids throughout the day went from 0 to class 7's. Crazy stuff.

A few rapids later, we stopped the rafts and hiked up into the canyon, to a spot where a waterfall flowed out of a cave. I wore the wrong shoes, and couldn't make it all the way up due to a lack of traction, but what I saw was amazing. Then it was back to the river for more rapids. We were all soaked and having a blast by the time we stopped for lunch.

I hate leaving this incomplete, but I'm exhausted. In all, we went 45 miles by river. After lunch it was no more rapids; just floating and the occasional spray. At the end, we climbed into helicopters, which lifted us out of the Canyon, and climbed on buses to return to the lodge.

I felt... a calmness come over me. Something incredible, and I can't really explain it. Maybe after I've slept on it.

I used a disposable camera to take pictures, and as soon as they're developed I'll get them digitized and posted for ya'll.

Again, DO THIS THING. 265 bucks for all that.
