My Dreams of Going Commercial... Smashed.

Well guys, I have good news or bad news.

Recently, Apple Computer started an affiliate program, where authorized individuals could include links on their websites to content in the iTunes Music Store. Anyone following those links and then buying music would earn the authorized person a shiny nickel per song (approximately; it's a 5 percent commission and most songs are 99 cents).

I thought, wow! What a great way to let people know what I'm listening to when I write these things, or about that cool new folk album by Old Crow Medicine Show, while they read my blog. And I get a shiny nickel for my Shiny Nickel Collection (SNC)! What could be better?

So I applied. And they responded back...

We regret to inform you that iTunes has chosen not to accept your application for the iTunes Affiliate Program at this time. This may be because:

-- The content is unrelated to iTunes
-- Your site is temporarily down or under construction ¿-please make sure to apply again after 2 weeks.
-- A wrong or misspelled URL given in the application. Please correct the problem and apply again.
-- Your site is aesthetically unpleasing
-- Your site promotes tobacco, alcoholic beverages or excessive drinking/drug use
-- Your site contains extreme religious content
-- Your site is international (with a majority of visitors based OUTSIDE the US. or written in a foreign language)

But I was encouraged to correct the problem and apply again. That of course is dependent on if I can figure out which problem it is, which is by no means a foregone conclusion. After all...

-- The content is unrelated to iTunes
Well, yeah, kind of. But they're not just targeting music sites with this, so it's kind of a strange requirement.
-- Your site is temporarily down or under construction
It's ALWAYS under construction; it's a blog after all. As for the site being down, since it's on Apple's own servers, then they wouldn't be able to check it if it were down because they'd be down too.
-- A wrong or misspelled URL given in the application.
Don't think so.
-- Your site is aesthetically unpleasing
They think my site is ugly? Wahhhh! That one really hurts.
-- Your site promotes tobacco, alcoholic beverages or excessive drinking/drug use
Hmmm... one article about being drunk, and to balance it out an entry on moderation. Don't think so.
-- Your site contains extreme religious content
...Define extreme.
-- Your site is international (with a majority of visitors based OUTSIDE the US. or written in a foreign language)
Not really.

So I'm puzzled. Why do you think they didn't like me? Should I try again?

Anyway, looks like there won't be any rampant commercialism (or shiny nickels) on this site anytime soon.
