NOT Taking the Pledge.

A much better-known blogger than I (considering his entry got mentioned on MSNBC.com, something I neither aspire to nor hope for) has submitted his idea for a "pledge" to which other bloggers should agree.

Quoting from Buzzmachine:

After the election results are in, I promise to:
: Support the President, even if I didn't vote for him.
: Criticize the President, even if I did vote for him.
: Uphold standards of civilized discourse in blogs and in media while pushing both to be better.
: Unite as a nation, putting country over party, even as we work together to make America better.

(end quote)

I won't be taking this pledge, and I can't imagine how anyone would. While I don't generally delve deeply into strongly political issues, I won't in any way undertake an oath that would restrict my ability to freely discuss whatever I wish.

I do believe that this year's election was one of the most politically divisive events (or rather, the culmination of at least four years of divisive events), and I believe we should all work to move past that. I don't, however, believe that blind support for ANY branch of the federal government (none of which is supposed to be more powerful than the others, as you will recall, even if it is vested into an individual) will help anyone move past anything.

I agree with parts of this pledge, but I have serious issues with much of it, and am not required to take a pledge to support those parts that I do agree with.

Please post questions, responses, hate mail, and other things in response. I love to hear other points of view.

Recent Music: Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. Kinda depressing, but it's how I feel lately.
