Politics -- From the Other End of my Ten Foot Pole

I didn't make this blog to talk about politics, and I don't want to do so now... very much. I can't imagine that anyone out there wants to know who I'm going to vote for, nor my take on the great political issues. I have my opinions, and they work for me; everyone else has their own, or needs to formulate those without relying on me to do it for them.

However (you knew there had to be SOME reason for writing this), I feel that the election is very important. In the interest of helping everyone make the most informed decision that they can, here are some links at which I believe every U.S. citizen should take a look.

The Current Electoral Vote Predictor 2004 is a fantastic site. The author incorporates daily polls of American citizens as provided by various polling agencies, and places them on an interactive map. He also provides commentary on the reliability of different polls (did you know the Gallup Poll isn't totally random? They contact people based on a pre-determined percentage of Republican and Democrat registered voters), and lots of other info. It's updated about daily.

Confused by all the vinegar being tossed around by both sides? Sitting around, thinking "Boy, I wish there were a 'nonpartisan, nonprofit, "consumer advocate" for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.'?" Well, lucky for you, there is! Visit factcheck.org , and find out the truth behind the candidates' statements -- Has Kerry flip-flopped? Has Cheney gotten Halliburton kickbacks? Find out about these allegations and much more.

For federal guidance on voting procedures, check out FirstGov's Voting and Elections page. It's getting down to the wire here; depending on what state you live in, you have very little time left (or maybe no time left) to register in time to vote in November.

But suppose you don't like Bush or Kerry? There are other candidates out there, and not just Nader. They're not all available in all states, though, and unless you know about them, you can't really pick them anyway. Politics1 has a Presidency 2004 Ballot Access chart, which lists each registered candidate, and in what states they will appear on the ballot. If you happen to live in California, you can even vote for a convicted murderer! What a country *honk honk*!

Still can't find anyone to vote for? You might want to consider supporting The Committee Against Mediocrity in Politics . These folks support a constitutional amendment to include "None of the Above" on federal ballots. The idea is that if "None of the Above" wins the election, then new candidates must be provided and the election re-done. Interesting idea, anyway.

Hope these help out someone. Pass them on if you think it will help people make an informed decision at their polling places. Ignore them if you want. :)

I recently bought On Your Side by Pete Yorn at the iTunes Music Store. Good stuff. Clicking on the link will open iTunes on your computer, assuming you've installed it already.
