*this entry in my Big Black Book appears to be
incomplete, as I haven't actually put any verses from the Havamal at the end of
it.*
It's not just for homes anymore.
While providing welcome to home visitors is important, don't neglect those who
come into your office, join you at a restaurant, simply pass you on the
street.
Hospitality is an attitude,
not a service. To be hospitable one must meet the needs of others, without
allowing himself to be stepped on. A good guest will not take advantage of
hospitality and will be properly appreciative, but keep in mind it is not always
their fault if they were not taught to be mannerly and gracious. Also, for many
it is harder to be a guest than a host. To be a guest is to
submit.
The host is responsible for
ensuring the comfort of the guest, and for explaining the rules of the
household. A guest should not overtax the resources of the host, make
unreasonable requests, or disrupt the day-to-day life of the household.
