The Nine Noble Virtues are a group of... well,
virtues which many modern Asatru adhere to. It's kind of a code of conduct.
Keep in mind, though, that not everyone subscribes to them, and they are a
modern construction. A good modern construction, in my opinion, but there's
nothing ancient about them. Someone much wiser than myself looked at the body
of Lore that we have, and digested it into these 9 points:
Courage Truth Honor Fidelity Discipline Hospitality Industriousness Self-Reliance Perseverance
Don't be all impressed. I didn't recite them. I
have a list. I've never bothered memorizing them because I believe that the act
of memorization demeans them. One's understanding and following of the virtues
is not apparent by one's ability to spew them forth at a moment's notice, and
constantly being aware of them as singular concepts prevents one from truly
following them. For example, if every night before I went to bed I went over
this list and tried to apply one thing in my day to each of them, I'm not
applying my life to them; I'm applying them to my
life.
Back a couple of years ago I
began writing down my impressions of them. I'm not done, and I probably never
will be, but I figured I'd post some of the conclusions I have reached. This is
all copied out of my big black book. I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you'll
provide me feedback on where you agree and where you don't.
