*This is a new work, not one of the ones I'm
copying out of my Big Black
Book*
Like most Asatruar, I strive to
live my life with honor. That's a very noble ambition, especially considering
what a hard word it is for me to define.
There's no one definition for it.
Honor is made up of a lot of things. I think, first and foremost this: Honor
is that thing that makes you act as if someone is watching, even when you know
they're not. If the convenience store worker goes to the bathroom when I'm the
only one in the store at 3 in the morning, honor keeps me from grabbing 3
Mountain Dews, a can of Pringles, and 3 frozen pizzas and heading out the door.
Honor means treating everything you
say as if it's an oath. What is said should be treated as done, and if it is
not to be done, it shouldn't be said. If the clerk at the convenience store
jokingly says "Don't steal anything while I go take a dump," and I reply "I
won't," then I will abide by that and pay for the 3 Mountain Dews, the can of
Pringles, and the 3 frozen pizzas when he emerges. He, in turn, will wash his
hands before returning to work, as he told his boss he would
do.
Honor means acknowledging your
mistakes. If I am working in a convenience store at 3 in the morning and I come
out of the bathroom as someone walks out the door, I may accuse them of running
off with 3 Mountain Dews, a can of Pringles, and 3 frozen pizzas. However, if I
accost them and find their arms empty, then I apologize.
Honor means graciously accepting the
mistakes of others. If the convenience store worker accosts me in the parking
lot, I will understand that he is responsible for the store and that I look
suspicious because 1) I'm wearing all black 2) it's 3 in the morning and 3) I
have the look of a die-hard Mountain Dew/Pringles/frozen pizza
fiend.
And that's what honor means to
me. Gotta go now; I have the strongest desire to hit a convenience store and
pick up some snacks.
