Industriousness

Shouldn't you be doing something right now?

No, seriously. I'm doing something by writing this. I am typing and producing something of worth for me and hopefully others.

What have you done today?

OK, I'll let you off the hook and flatter myself at the same time. By reading this, you are industriously attempting to improve yourself. Congratulations. You're being industrious too.

Person + Industriousness ---------------> Productivity.

I know, it sounds like what the foreman at the factory wants out of you. It does go deeper than that, though.

Industry is the action of producing something. Industriousness therefore refers to that state of being productive. Why is this important enough to be a virtue? Well, without producing (and of course reproducing) there would be no life. Look around you at all those manmade things. Those were thought up and made by industrious people.

Industriousness is a way that you can make both your own life and the lives of others better. By producing whatever you produce, or doing whatever you do, you improve life. At my job, some would say that I produce bad news. That's one way to look at it. On the other hand, I produce closure, because Private Smith has a chance to say goodbye to his mother. I produce happiness, because Sgt Jones learns that he's a daddy. And I produce relief, when Petty Officer Parker finds out that his wife came through surgery just fine.

What do you produce, and how industrious are you about it?

You know a great way to be industrious? Leave lots of comments about this and any other entries here. That way you will be producing thoughts within other people! Try it right now!
