Yep, just paused right in the middle of that
rather longish bit about morality because I was struck by something. Not a car,
or a falling chunk of ceiling, but a
thought.
I was just writing that bit
about my college professor. In case you don't read the Profound stuff, I'll
reiterate. A celebrated English professor, young guy, very popular, was giving
a short introduction to whatever international movie was playing at the campus
theater. He had this habit of pausing for effect, rather like the Narrator in
the Rocky Horror Picture Show. He began, "We live... in a world..." and
unfortunately paused just long enough for a small group of mischievous overgrown
imps to begin the applause. That became the catchphrase for that semester.
And I realized that being one of the
first to start clapping is one of those things that probably sounds geeky to
you, the reader, but makes me cool in my eyes.
For
example:
I was that guy who,
upon learning that the high school history teacher hated the smell of watermelon
bubble gum above all else in the world, distributed a piece to every person in
the classroom.
I was
that guy who, in the middle of a lecture on democracy in World Civilizations,
began humming Glory Glory Hallelujah, inspiring everyone to join in an a
patriotic upswell.
I was
that guy who wrote the petition protesting budget cuts to the college academic
programs and increases in the athletics program. The resulting media blitz
resulted in the ill-fated press conference where the college president announced
"If we don't fund athletics we won't have any black
students."
I was that
guy with the mohawk that went through various color shades, resulting in the
nickname "Strypes" (because of my resemblance to a billiard
ball).
But we don't just live in
the past. We have to accept that some things are done, and although they helped
make us who we are today, they are only part of who we are.
So:
I am that guy who
traipses from war zone to war zone, who runs outside during attacks to applaud
the mortar fire, and manages to remain calm during rocket
attacks.
I am that guy
who stands up for what he believes in, and backs down from no one when I am
confident in my
beliefs.
I am that guy
who corrects the grammar of college presidents who are blowing me off over my
concerns.
I am that guy
devoted to Tyr, as well as the other Aesir and
Vanir.
I am that guy who
may not have faced all of his demons, but has done damned well against the ones
faced thus far.
I am
that guy who quit smoking 3 months ago, and has succeeded thus
far.
You know what's great? I
could keep going on and on. But really, a blog is a public thing, not a real
journal at all, and I don't want to bore the readers. I can go on and on in my
head, though.
What it boils down to is
this: I am proud of who I am, and who I was. I am excited about who I will be.
And, as Vanatru would point out (and
probably will), I am also a dork.
