I've been traveling for 5 and a
half years now. I've lived out of various sets of luggage, duffel bags, and
backpacks. Everytime I go somewhere, I throw things
away
How the HEL do I end up with so
much shit?
I always throw away just
about all my socks and underwear before I go anywhere. I keep a couple of pairs
of each, to get home where I'll buy some more, because they're 1) funky and 2)
prone to take up more space than I really
want.
Where do all these socks come
from? Thankfully, not the underwear.... but the socks! I never buy any sock
that goes above the calf. There are at least 3 pairs of these lying on the
floor right now.
Then there's the
more recent development -- the holistic pharmacy. There's a couple of
prescription items -- I still have most of a bottle of Zyban in my backpack from
when I quit smoking, and there's the malaria medication on the shelves. I have
just thrown away 3 bottles of hemodilators, 5 bottles of expired ZMA
testosterone boosters, 2 empty bottles of glucosamine chondroiton, and an empty
bottle of 1-Test AD. In my sling pack there is still one bottle of aspirin, one
bottle of non-aspirin pain reliever, one almost empty bottle of Tribulus
Terrestris, another bottle of Glucosamine, the remainder of a bottle of Growth
Factor-1, another bottle of 1-Test AD, most of a bottle of creatine, and enough
squished Powerbars to run the electrical needs of a small city by hamster
wheels.
Blaghhh!
So
yeah, I'm packing. Most of the things I pack go into trash cans rather than
duffel bags; this is just the way things go. I have 3 duffel bags, and thus far
I have carried 6 bags of trash out of my 7X7X7 room. There is another bag of
trash sitting in a box on the floor, and one sitting on top of the shelves.
I've ripped the patches off two of my
sets of uniforms and packed them away. This leaves one set that I'm wearing now
and one set in case those start stinking so badly that I can't wear them for the
next 4 days. All my civilian clothes are on the bed (I'm laying against them
and sitting on them right now) so that I can set them aside to be washed and
worn home. I've thrown out most of my brown t-shirts and will throw out my PT
gear once leaving is a bit more
imminent.
I'm debating whether to pack
the iPod or throw it away. Before that disastrous morning at the gym this would
have been a non-issue. Now that it doesn't work anymore it's just a 300 dollar
cool paperweight. However, it still has some entertainment value, and might be
fixable. If not I can probably figure out a way to pull out the 5 gig hard
drive and use it in something else. There. Settled. It's coming with me, but
not in carry-on luggage this time.
There are three copies of the Poetic
Edda in this room (two Larringtons and one Hollander). Also one copy of
Snorri's Edda, one copy of Edred's Runelore, and one copy of Smiley's Sagas of
Icelanders. Add to this my underwater archaeology books, some Diane Mott
Davidson murder mysteries, the latest book in The Last Rune series, and my Great
Big Black Book, and that's the short list of the books that are going with me
(the ones that are visible from here). There are also two BOXES of books that
are not making the return trip, and will join (or re-join) the paperback library
here on base.
(Books NEVER get thrown
away; I don't care how bad they are. I don't throw them away, anyway. I used
to leave Ceremonial Magick books lying beside the Gideon Bible in hotel rooms --
I was always interested in reading them, but never got into the practice. At
least that way the person kinda had a choice -- they could read the story of
Solomon in the Bible, or the Lesser Key of Solomon in... well,
y'know.)
Most of my geekery was never
unpacked. My digital camcorder was, and my cell phone (it doesn't work here,
but it still makes a great phone book), and of course the laptop. However the
DVD burner, USB2 PC Card and Bluetooth adapter are still in the medical bag
under the bed.
There's one thing I
fear forgetting more than anything else -- my Keeper of Seasons Hall banner. I
always do this -- I don't want to take it down until the last minute, but I am
afraid that at that last minute I'll forget it. That's just the way I am.
Worrying that I will forget it of course makes it next to impossible that I will
in fact forget it, though, so it's a good
thing.
In case you didn't realize it
yet, this is just a rant/packing list. I was going to get into the "Why do I
need stuff to validate my existence?" question, but didn't. After all, if
you're throwing most of it away, then apparently your existence doesn't need
much validation. Everything I take will fit into 3 duffel bags (easily) and one
backpack. One is already full, one is half full, and the other has yet to be
pulled from under the bed, so I'm really not sure about
it.
Oh yeah, there's also the
strumstick carrying case, which will be carrying (duh) the strumstick. So 3
duffel bags, one bag pack (or 2 if I can't squeeze the slingpack into a duffel,
and a strumstick carrying case.
And of
course, there's always the extra duffel bag that I've been using to carry
laundry. I could always....
