happy birthday to me

Another year gone by, and I have to say that this has been one of the most uneventful birthdays I've ever had. On Sunday I went to my parents' house where my mother made a home-cooked meal (a very rare event these years). It was very nice, but there was no cake. No cake? What's up with that? Later, I taught my family how to play a simplified version of mahjong. I had fun, but I think the others were just humoring me. Today (the 21st, actually--my official B-day), I had planned to take a drive out to the scenic San Pedro area, but the daily thunder storms we've been having here in "sunny" California made me think better of it. In the evening, my good friend, Karen, took me out to dinner at a favorite restaurant, and then we took in a movie: Bride and Prejudice, an English-language Bollywood, of sorts, from the director of Bend It Like Beckham and "inspired" by Jane Austen's book. I have to say I rather liked it; it was quite amusing and put me in a much better mood than I had been in for the better part of the day.

33 years. A good friend of mine commented recently that, on his 33rd birthday, he had thought about the fact that Jesus Christ lived only 33 years and had accomplished so much. This thought had made him feel like he had accomplished so little in that amount of time. However, as I told me friend, Jesus was God after all. We cannot so easily compare ourselves to Him. As for me, after 33 years, I feel that my life is only now just beginning. The best is yet to come.
