score! (goth style)
I was elated to see this book lying on the table
in the dining room today.
When I asked my sister-in-law if I
could borrow it, on account of the fact that I love Edward Gorey, she told me
that she had two copies and that I could have one if I wanted it. Evidently, she
had intended to give one to me for my birthday, but my brother had poo-pooed the
idea, thinking that I wouldn't like it. What? Me? Not like Edward Gorey?! I
scoff at that. Another indication of how little my family actually
knows
me. Gorey's illustrations have thrilled me ever since I was a youngster,
watching BBC's
Mystery
on PBS (if anyone knows what I'm talking about, Gorey's illustrations were used
in the opening sequence of that show). You see, as a kid, my parents didn't
believe in cable television, so that left my siblings and I few options: CBS,
NBC, ABC and PBS. Truth be told, I think I'm better off for it. Clearly my
penchant for dry humor and sarcasm
(Monty Python's Flying
Circus) and science fiction
(Dr.
Who) is a direct result of hours of PBS
programming as a kid. Anyway, back to Gorey. I would even venture to say that
any self-proclaimed "goth" who doesn't, at least, have a passing knowledge of
Gorey's artwork is nothing more than a poser. There. I've said
it.
(I just love Gorey's sense of the
macabre.)
