St. V-Day Recap

Valentine's Day was somewhat bitter-sweet for me yesterday. Which is actually a lot better than how Valentine's Day usually goes for me--it's most often utterly depressing. But yesterday was not that bad. In the morning I received a package from my sweetheart, Crystal (Chinese name: Yanyang), who happens to live 10,000 miles away. She had sent me a homemade scrapbook containing photos from her family-life, childhood and college years. This is quite possibly the best and most heartfelt gift I've ever received from a girl. I was also delighted to discover that my girlfriend was the cutest little kid ever. Anyway, she also sent me a tin of Valentine's Day chocolates, and, in the spirit of the holiday, I consumed far too many of them. I had known that she had sent me the package, but I wasn't actually expecting it to arrive until my birthday next week. It was quite a surprise. It was kismet at its best, I think.

Later in the evening, I had dinner with my parents, and in my masochistic fervor, I had been feeling that it was time to let them in on my little secret--that, while traveling in China, I had met a wonderful girl and had, since that time, spoken to her every day on the phone and that, yes, a serious (though admittedly crazy) relationship was developing. They were more than a little shocked by this revelation, and a myriad of questions ensued. I don't blame them for being skeptical, but just once in my life I'd like them to be unreservedly supportive. Oh well. I'm sure they'll warm up to the whole thing once they actually meet Yanyang. She's a darling girl; how can anyone not fall in love with her?
