I have arrived
I am now in the (mostly) beautiful city of Hong
Kong. But let me begin by saying: Los Angeles International Airport sucks!
Seriously, I've been in many, many airports, and LAX is really sub-par
considering that Los Angeles is supposed to be such a great, modern city and
all. It's got nothing on the HK airport, let me tell you. After going through
the security check at LAX I thought I might grab something to eat before I
boarding my Japan Airlines flight, but do you know there is next to nothing in
the way of eating establishments after the security check in the Tom Bradley
terminal? I had to settle for a bag of Doritos from one of those little kiosk
vendors. Anyway... I won't bore you with all the gory details. Suffice it to say
that the flight was long and boring, which is what I hate most about traveling.
I had plenty of things to do: DVD's, books, iPod, but not long after take-off I
got hit by a massive migraine. I popped four Advil and went into a meditative
state until the pain subsided. Oh, and, by the way, I realized another thing I
absolutely hate about traveling: riding those stupid buses to get from the
terminal to the actual plane. What's up with that? Anyway... the trip to
Narita/Tokyo was 10 hours. I changed planes and flew another 4 hours to Hong
Kong. I had originally thought that having a stopover would break up the
monotony... but I was wrong. I'd much rather fly directly. Get it all done in
one, long, mind-numbing shot.
But I got
here safely and took a taxi from the airport to the hotel in Kowloon. The hotel
is okay, a little small for what I paid, I think. But it works. I went to bed
almost immediately, but, despite being dead tired, I didn't get a good night's
sleep. It's just a matter of getting used to everything, I think. Now, I'm just
waiting for Yanyang to arrive (probably tomorrow), so think I'll be using today
to explore a little bit of Kowloon and plan our itinerary for the week. More
later.
