recent flicks
I've seen a variety of films recently, and, for
the most part, I've been managing to stay clear of mainstream flicks. However, I
should first address the major disappointment that was
Constantine.
Shady theology aside, this movie just didn't have the story to keep me
interested for the two hours of my life I was unfortunate enough to invest into
it. I had been looking forward to this movie for quite some time; what a let
down. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and skip it. I won't waste
my time trying to write an all-out review of it; I just want to forget it and
move on with my life.
Last weekend I
purchased a couple of Cantonese language movies on DVD. The first is called
The
Eye, which is kind of like HK's answer to
The Sixth
Sense, I think. This film had been recommended
to me by Jon's wife, Mandi, who said I would not be disappointed. She was
correct. The
Eye has just the right amount of creepiness, a
la Japanese horror films, but with a much more linear plot line. The story has a
beginning and an end, which I find to be a very welcome feature indeed these
days. The second DVD I bought was Jackie Chan's
New Police
Story. Yes, it's your typical Jackie Chan
fare, but I enjoyed it quite a bit because I suppose I was in desperate need of
a Chan fix.
I also caught the Thai
action flick, Ong
Bak, and I just have to say... wow. Tony Jaa
is amazing, and, though I've never been a big fan of Thai kick boxing, I found
myself thoroughly impressed by his skills (supposedly all demonstrated without
the aid of trick photography, CG or wires). The bone-crunching fight scenes were
something to behold; they had me cringing more than once. For me, the Thai
language has always been a little hard on the ears, but if you're like me in
that respect, don't let that stop you from seeing
Ong
Bak. It's definitely worth the price of
admission.
