I'll never see Bambi the same way again
Went to see
The Ring
Two last night with my good friend, Karen. Big
disappointment. There were exactly two compelling/disturbing moments in the
entire movie. The first involved a pack of vicious deer and was truly a
brilliant moment... until I came to understand the purpose behind the sequence.
Or at least I think I understood what it was all about, but, in the end, I just
didn't buy the explanation. The other mildly scary scene, I thought, was part of
the climax of the film: the rather disturbing image of the evil little girl,
Samara, climbing up the wall of a well after Rachel (Naomi Watt's character).
But, in the end, I just felt like even that was meant only to top the scariness
of Samara climbing out of the television in the first film. Overall,
The Ring
Two is not that horrific (as I expect
horror
films should be). I wasn't scared, and Karen, who gets shaken easily, only
jumped once. Originally, I was excited when I learned that Hideo Nakata
(director of the original
Ringu
and Ringu
2) was directing this sequel. I'd like to
think that the big movie studio didn't allow Hideo to go where he might have
wanted to with this film, but the truth is that there isn't anything wrong with
the Japanese director's vision. The problem lies with the script; it's not a
good story to begin with, and no director in the world can make a bad story into
a good movie. I didn't care about Rachel, and I didn't care about her weird
little son, Aidan. I hope that Samara finishes them off for good someday. If you
haven't seen The Ring Two
yet, do yourself a favor and save the $10.
