The very first step in building a patio is planning. Begin by asking yourself a few questions. For example:
- What will the area be used for primarily?
- Do you entertain guests often?
- Do your plans include a spa or whirlpool?
- Will you be grilling/barbecueing on the patio?
These questions will help to define a purpose. A driveway or walkway has a very specific purpose. However, a large patio can have many uses. By making a list of all the activities that will involve the patio you will get a better idea of just how large an area you need.
Other common questions are bound to arise at this stage. Stone colors, patterns, shape, landscaping. Remember though, this is just a broad outline of the patios' main purpose. Details can be hammered out later once a basic layout has been established. Continue planning by sketching some layout ideas. Consider all entrances and exits from the patio to the home, garage, or garden house. Many installations have a central focus we often design around. This can be an entrance or an architectural feature, even a planting bed or garden. This isn't essential for every design but consider a focal point before you begin to plan.
