one boa, many uses

boa (27k image)
you could make a nice boa from about 1/2 yd of fabric. if you would like to use it for a sea urchin, just wrap one around a stocking cap and safety pin or stitch it down. boas would also make a great furry tail for a kitty, puppy or big bad wolf. make a diva costume with one in leopard print.

Under the sea...

credit for this idea goes to my friend jacki, who mentioned that a friend of hers had covered a sweatshirt. i thought a hat worked better with my "quick and easy" theme.

odd projects

cozy3 (34k image)
this is one of a few little things i have gotten done lately. not much art making these days but i am finally done with all of the major events at work, so i am hoping to be back in full swing soon. here is a project i worked on at a couple of open house/ demonstration events this fall. i was demonstrating inkle weaving with pick-up patterns. the diamonds in this band are threads that i have pulled up to float over the top of the other threads in order to make a pattern. i have about 6 feet of this woven band to do something with...

art wear

before (17k image)
this weekend was a big event at the art center where i work. we have an annual runway show of wearable art with about 50 designers. it is a big deal and more fun than i expected it to be. this year's theme was vintage-inspired fashion (my favorite). since everyone dresses up for the event, i needed an outfit. a friend gave me a bunch of vintage dresses this summer. she was doing some closet cleaning and thought some would fit me. i haven't done much except keep them in a laundry basket in my sewing room for the past few months, so i grabbed the basket and started trying things on. i pulled out the dress seen above. it had some potential but i really dislike white clothes, and it had a lot of white. so wednesday afternoon, i dunked it in a trash can full of dye - emerald green, turquoise and black. i stirred it once in a while and finally pulled it out, washed it and found that the dress was now a lovely aqua color. it still needed a little something, so i started digging through my ribbon, thinking of putting a stripe around the hem of pink or black. then i discovered the $1 spool of black polkadotted grossgrain ribbon that i bought months ago. you can see the result...

wicked

stage_0508_17 (35k image)
we drove to chicago to see wicked this past weekend. i don't even have words to describe how great it was. it is the best show i have ever seen. i am not sure i breathed through most of act one. the set, the costumes... you can see some great pictures from the production at wickedthemusical.com i really have nothing intelligent to say - it was one of those experiences that i will remember always.

once in a while

...the creative muses all decide to gang up on you and you have a fabulously productive afternoon. i pieced the beginnings of a crazy quilt block that is now ready for embellishments. more details about that later. i stitched 10 puppets. pigs and tigers today. i have about 40 (dogs, unicorns, dinos, monsters, penguins) that are waiting for eyes and stuffing. i need to go and rent some good movies. and then i got inspired by my illustration friday piece "lost".... no details on this one yet because it is going to be a present for somebody. lots of teasers here but that means lost of photos coming in the near future.

bring your dog to blog day

lufeet (8k image)
i wish i had thought of this, but the cute idea belongs to someone else. i have run across several dogs and cats being "brought" to blogs, so i decided that lucy needed to come too. here she is sleeping on the couch between andy's feet last night while we were watching a movie. she just turned 9 on the 8th of oct. isn't she sweet?

some lovely books and lovely authors

i have run across two beautiful books in the last week or so and i want to share them with you.

i met the author of this book while on vacation in maine. her yarn shop is a delight of color and texture. a friend, who we were visiting in maine, helped with the photography in the book. it has beautiful pictures and great instructions for dyeing yarns (which i haven't done a lot of).

i met this author when he came to do a lecture at the art center where i work. he was very kind and the quilts he brought with him were breathtaking. the book is pretty and his quilts have a distinct style that grows on me the more i get to know his work.

Costume Idea KickOff

i know this idea inspired at least one costume last year, so it is kicking off the start of costumes for this year. i will be throwing in some of my favorite repeats and adding new ones, too!

Happy October

i am a little late kicking off October on the blog, but it has arrived! Starting today I will be posting the second annual "Costume Idea a Day". This means I brainstorm a clever and easy costume idea for you every day that is left until Halloween. It is a large order for me to be able to post something every day, but I am going to do my best! I am also going to try and post a few pictures of my favorite costumes from the past. You can see a few sneak peaks of those in the new Halloween title. More festive fall goodness to come...
