Tie One On: Pink Lemonade

lemonadeRahn (35k image)
time again for an apron of the month with the "tie one on" stitchers. here is my apron for july's theme: Pink Lemonade. i wasn't sure i would have time to do anything this month, since i have been nutso busy. but these two fabrics were sitting next to each other in the bargain bin when i was at the fabric store the other day and they just said pink lemonade to me. since andy was in NY and then CA in the past week and a half, i had a little time for recreational sewing. this apron is silly and fluffy but i have worn it several times in the last few days while trying to make a dent in the much neglected dirty house. it makes me smile. a link to the rest of the apron submissions coming soon...

... and Happy 35th Anniversary

...to the best parents a kid could ask for. i am a day late with wishes and sending your card (but it is on its way). my brain is perhaps a little waterlogged. we love you guys.

Illustration Friday: Tranquility

my week has been anything but tranquil... but a little jazz guitar goes a long way.

the water gods have determined...

...that i am going to get wet. today it was carrying groceries from store to car to house. so wet i had to change every article of clothing. the grocery bags barely made it in to the house before self-destructing.

Pre-Science

i picked up a copy of "Pride and Prescience" by Carrie Bebris when i cruised through the bookstore on my way to lunch.

"Pride and Prescience
Or
A Truth Universally Acknowledged

Mr. & Mrs. Darcy, the joyous newlyweds from Pride and Prejudice, have not even left for their honeymoon when they find themselves embroiled in a mystery involving one of their wedding guests. The lovely Caroline Bingley is engaged to marry a rich and charismatic American. Unfortunately this windswept courtship is marred by many strange events such as nocturnal wanderings, spooked horses, carriage accidents, and atypical incidents of mortal consequence. Soon the whole Bingley family seems the target of a sinister plot, with only the Darcys recognizing the danger ."

i had read that it was written in a very similar style to that of georgette heyer, who is the very first historical fiction author i read. since she is a favorite, i had to try this out.

the nice (but dimwitted) lady at the cash register made lots of small talk as she was helping me. " ooooooh. pride and pre - science. that sounds very complicated. or wait... i think i know this book. i think i read it. or maybe that was the one that they made a movie about didn't they? it was really good. it's by that famous author, right. she wrote all those other books...." and so on. it was delightful.

despite the dippy sales lady, i am enjoying the book very much. i am a fan of anything austen or that era, so having new things to read is very fun. alas, i must finish this entry and go to bed. 2 classes to teach tomorrow and i should have gone to sleep an hour ago.

chocolate covered aliens

not much blogging this week because i am too tired. i am teaching 2 classes as well as trying to get some of my "regular" work done. it is fun and these are things that i was signed on for before i took the new job so i have been looking forward to them.

this year we decided to make finger puppets with a neighborhood group that comes to visit us every year. todays group of girls made their puppets and then did shows for each other for the last 1/2 hr of class. my very favorite shows were "chocolate covered aliens" and "chocolate covered aliens 2". aliens shrink if you dip them in chocolate and then you can squash them. i bet you didn't know that.

the return of i-fri

sport (57k image)
i have been on hiatus for several weeks, but i managed to squeak one in for this week's illustration friday, "sport". i am not much of a sports fan but i am an african violet fan and so this alternate definition popped in to my head.

friends with cameras

i love this. i have more stuff to post. my friend amy took a snapshot of the stuff i gave her family. zippered bags for her son's treasures and a couple of the dyed t-shirts from the annual dye party.

by request

a reader (hi Carrie B!) requested in a comment that i share my favorite dyeing books with you. here they are!

color by accident and color by design by ann johnston. i really like her simple instructions and the use of everyday kinds of materials like elmers glue gel. these are great books and i recommend them highly.

like usual...

like usual, i forgot to take pictures of a bunch of different things before i gave them away. it was one of those weeks. 2 zippered bags for my mom, 2 zippered bags from my friend ben and about 30 dyed & silk screened t-shirts for the mgroe crew...
lion (15k image)
here is one i remembered, however. a pincushion for a friend at work. rachel stitched all of the straight lines, and i was in charge of the curves. the little flower pins are shrinky dinks, inspired by bella dia.

Tie One On: Home on the Range

RahnTieoneon (62k image)
it's another collective art project! this time it is a collection of artists creating aprons that go with a theme. i love aprons, since i do so many messy projects. i wear them all the time when i am teaching. June's theme is "home on the range" and being from SD, i had to do buffalos. it is made from bits of calicos and the buffalos are paper pieced and backed with light weight interfacing. the words are hand embroidered in perle cotton. i may add a pocket... i didn't think of it while i was sewing and i think it might be a good idea. too see other aprons in the collection, click here...

there is a link in the right column for "Home on the Range" gallery. time to start thinking about "Pink Lemonade" for July...
