yellow

today i wore a yellow shirt. this morning my yellow irises opened. (the pink ones have mysteriously vanished. maybe they decided that it wasn't worth coming up this year. who knows.) and my little yellow rose bush that my mom started from a twig has popped open its first beautiful little flower. it's a yellow day.

toothpicks

on another blog i read, the author was wondering about knitting little tiny objects. i made a comment about my great-grandmother knitting with toothpicks. i just had to pull out this little sweater and take a picture. i am sure mom will comment with more details... smile

tatting with yarn

back when i taught a tatting class in december, i got some size "1" and "0" tatting needles that are supposed to be for tatting with yarn. i thought it sounded kind of fun and certainly great for kids in my class since it would be a much larger scale than the tiny thread usually used for tatting. (my 5th grade student did just beautifully with the small needles and rainbow colored crochet cotton.) andy gave me some beautiful wool-silk tweed yarn for my birthday and i have been trying to think of something to do with it. on a whim the other night, i pulled out the large tatting needles and started making my basic snowflake. what a nifty looking flowery thing. so i connected two together. i think i am going to make a whole shawl of tatted flowers - a little lacy something to go over my shoulders...
(that's a quarter in there for scale) oh, and yes for the textile enthusiasts out there, i did say needles and not shuttle. i really am better at tatting with a needle than a shuttle and you certainly couldn't do yarn with a shuttle. if you talk to purists, they want to say needle tatting is something completely different, but i say "do what makes sense to you."

lunch time

lunchbag (14k image)
when i got sick of working on the dress, i stopped and pulled out this cute lunch bag, which i have had cut out (but not stitched) for weeks. i love this fabric so much i can't stand it. the green bottom is a textured coton i got in a remnant bin.

the dress is coming along. i have the bodice put together except for the zipper. i realized at some point that i mixed up the lining back and front sections, so i had to put the lining in inside out. i had overlocked all of the edges, so it's not too messy and i really really didn't want to tear all of that out. linings rather than facings are working ok. i am going to leave the bottom edge of the lining free of the waist seam because i am pretty sure it is not going to lay flat. i will turn it under and hand stitch it later.

grumble grumble

i hate having to improvise on a pattern i have never made before. i just cut out a really cute dress that i am making as my anniversary present to myself. i got to the last 4 pieces and i was about 1/4 yd short. either: 1) it was cut the wrong length 2) it shrunk a lot in the wash or 3) the pattern is a little too finicky. it was pretty tight width-wise too and when i measured that, it was the right width. no shrinking there. i am usually pretty precise when cutting things out. after many years, it finally dawned on me that it was lot easier to line things up if they were cut right in the first place. i even ironed the pattern before i started this time, which is something i never do. all is not lost. i was planning to line this dress anyhow, as the fabric i chose is an all-over eyelet lace (in otherwords it has lot of little holes). so i skipped cutting out facings and i will just use the lining as facings. but still grumble grumble. i am going to walk the dog now and then cut linings.

little to report

the last few evenings have been filled with post-production on a movie that we shot last christmas. we have been working on and off on special effects shots and we just started assembly and editing. (oh, and script writing and rerecording. we decided that a plot might be a nice thing to have!)

2 discoveries

first, a fun event at an art center near me. i think this is a marvelous idea. people love to watch artists in action.

"Open Canvas, a unique art event where you can watch as
40 artists create original works of art. As the evening
progresses, see their masterpieces take shape before your
eyes. At the end of the night you will have the opportunity to
purchase the finished artwork through a silent auction. Don’t
miss your chance to be there as artists and the
community connect and vibrant artworks unfurl on canvas."

second, i bought a copy of "The Princess Bride". the bookstore had a display that said it was the 30th anniversary edition. i realized that although i have seen the movie uncountable times, i have never read the book. what a delight! they just got pounced on by the R.O.U.S's in the Fire Swamp...

spring babies

lforlucy (11k image)
a friend from highschool had a little baby girl a couple of weeks ago. her name is Lucy, so i made her this little embroidered "L". i got a frame to put it in today but i haven't gotten it done yet. embroidered with perle cotton on muslin.

and then i finished the strawberry kiwi quilt for my friend skylar, who is about a month old. i quilted it with spirals that start on the green kiwis on the fabric and get bigger, so it's kind of got big circles all over it. (you can't really see the quilting in the picture) i started quilting with random shapes and i didn't like it and had to tear it out. note to self: don't do that again. i am new to quilting, really. i always used to tie the baby quilts i made because i didn't have a machine that was beefy enough to stitch nicely through all of the layers.

Tuesday's Illustration Friday: Mischief

mischief (40k image)
i was happily stitching away the other night, experimenting with making a sock creature. i put it down to find the thread and when i went to grab it, my sock thing was gone. i looked under the bag of stuffing. i checked the floor. i shook out the blanket. still confused, i wandered in to the living room and was met with this face. sneaky sneaky.

weaving with squirrels

blogfans may remember a class i taught in march of last year. it was my first long term residency and involved a quilting project with a group of middle school girls. i affectionately nicknamed that class "quilting for schnauzers" because the girls reminded me of a group of puppies (noisy, busy, no attention span, always nipping and yipping). today's class has been dubbed "weaving with squirrels". they were a little more rambunctious and random than i expected. lots of running and hopping and squeaking and chattering. lots of hugs (some of them had me for class before). they had a great time, but i was ready to come home and put my feet up. (thanks, honey, for cooking dinner!)

bags for spring

springbag1 (16k image) springbag2 (16k image)
one for me and one for fun. mine is the polkadots and lime green twill. the other is a remnant of upholstry fabric with a retro "tiki" print lining. i found a great little kit for fabric covered buttons, which i think are perfect for these bags.
