it's spring and...

a dog's thoughts turn to rolling in the dirt. don't know what the hound has been up to but we threw her in a bath. she's got sticky stuff in clumps and streaks of dirt and filthy feet... she has spent parts of the last two days basking in the yard and getting just filthy. fun for her but the bits of dirt on your pillow (since she has been sleeping on the bed) are just not ok.

rainbows and marimba

we went to the st paul chamber orchestra last night. andy and i were both feeling a little like we would rather stay home and snooze, but this was a concert we had bought extra tickets for and we were interested in going to see. part of mozart-fest. on the way there, we saw a gorgeous rainbow. it was huge, a complete arch and colors so saturated you could pick out each band. it was so cool. the n the music. first mozart's sympony #40. you would know if if you heard it. one of those that you can hum along to. then. the symphony #41, "jupiter". not quite as familiar to me but lovely just the same. the second half of the program was a surprise. the spco is doing a new thing called "jazzed up" fridays. for the 2nd half of the program you can choose to stay in the concert hall and listen to something a bit out of the ordinary played by members of the chamber orchestra, or you can go hear jazz in the lobby, played by local musicians. on the 2 jazz fridays we have attended the music has been outstanding. we deliberated but were intrigued by the 2nd half marimba music. the piece they played last was a trio for marimba, bassoon and flute called mosaics by eric ewazen. it was just lovely. we were both smiling by the end. and then we stepped out in to the lobby to hear the last of the jazz set - one of the bass players from the spco with an out-of-this-world trombone, piano and drums. marvelous.

not much to post...

because i have been caught up in "probably the worlds largest textile garage sale" for the last week or so. we at the textile center put on the garage sale as our big fundraiser for the year. it is crazy amounts of work but so fun. the buttons from the bunny below came from a button jar i got this year. i also left with a few 1970's patterns, some great vintage fabrics, 3 pairs of vintage gloves, some silk ribbon... i resisted bidding on a couple of spinning wheels and a singer featherweight sewing machine that were a part of the silent auction. i have been using the fabric to make cute little "cafe" aprons. little short ones that are basically a big pocket. great for garage sales and art shows where you want your stuff on your person. i made a super cute one for me for the garage sale (will post a picture) and i got so many compliments, i decided to make some more.

kitty quilt

catquilt (31k image)
the center of each pieced block is a square of kitty cat print surrounded by varied width strips of different colors. alternate squares are a fun modern print in brown, tan, lime, turquoise and red. i was a little hesitant to make a brown quilt for a baby, but i think this one is just marvelous. i didn't get a chance to start quilting today because i didn't have a big enough piece of anything for the back. but i made a quick trip to the fabric store and a piece is in the washer now.

a comment on the unreliability of husbands with messages

it seems that my dear hubby's first cousin had a little baby girl at the beginning of february and nobody told me! i read about her in the family newsletter this morning while i was drinking my coffee. as i shrieked and gave him a dirty look, he says "what? didn't you get that email?" welcome to the world miss naomi grace. i worked out my post tax aggressions by starting to make her a lovely quilt. i will post pictures tomorrow when there is better light.

the entire day

yesterday, we spent the day in the car. it was really only 4 hours but it felt like the entire day. we spent part of the weekend in des moines, seeing a show directed by a friend of ours. we like to go ad see his plays when we can. the nice part of the drive was listening to an odd but good book on tape - sabriel by garth nix - and stopping at a state park and letting the dog run and run.

today, we spent the entire day doing our taxes. that was it. whole day and one thing to show for it. we do ours every year and it always seems to be that no matter how organized we are (which is not very) we spend half the day looking for one certain pay stub or statement to check a number. we are a little obsessive about checking numbers because we have several times had forms sent to us with incorrect amounts on them and miscalculations. highly irritating errors which involve not enough withholding and us having to send big checks to our friends at the IRS. we finally called it quits at 5 and decided to print and assemble everything another night. sheesh.

today is a great day to dye

dyestoday (25k image)
it was about 60 degrees outside when i got home from work, so i put the dog on her string in the backyard and she helped me do some dyeing. i did 2 pieces of cotton and about 6 of silk. more materials for quilted silk cuffs. i was thinking about doing some glasses cases and maybe headbands. the cotton is for a swap that i have volunteered for. i get to send a packet of raw materials to another artist who is then challenged to make something from them and post it in their etsy shop. part of the challenge is to send what i want and not necessarily a medium/style that the artist normally works with. so far i know that the person sending things to me is from australia (!) and is a jeweler. i decided that my person to send to (unknown at this point) needed 1/2 yard of handdyed fabric. the piece of fabric for the swap is obscured in the clothesline picture so it will be a surprise, but i can hint that it is the piece in the large container without an arrow.
