ode to orange

i am running out of words for orange and purple. i have been making silk cuffs and trying to name them different things so that i can keep track of them. i have discovered that there aren't that many words for orange and purple. thesaurus.com gives me these suggestions:

orange: apricot, bittersweet, coral, peach, red-yellow, salmon, tangerine, titian
purple: amethyst, bluish red, heliotrope, lavender, lilac, magenta, mauve, mulberry, orchid, perse, plum, pomegranate, reddish blue, violaceous, violet, wine

i really don't want to have to resort to cute names like "sunshine surprise" or "tropical seabreeze".

i have used sunset, flame, coral.... so i need help with things that are orange and purple!

roosting pockets

Roosting_Pocket_Brown_Brown_Teardrop (23k image)andy and i (and our friends scott & danielle) are taking a basket making class. last night we all made roosting pockets for our backyard birdies. we used all kids of different materials combined with willow. basket making is fun for me because it is so different than the other craftiness than i am normally working on, but i am not sure i have built up the right muscles in my hands for working with willow. it has a mind of its own. i will post pictures of our own baskets at a later date.

Illustration Friday: Monster

back from a long hiatus... it's the return of illustration friday. i checked in on the topic today and knew i had the perfect thing. this is a little "thread doodle" that i did a week or so ago. i love doing little embroidered sketches. three little monsters with sparkly eyes, embroidered on wool felt.

FEATURED

i checked in on my etsy shop today and what do you know but one of my bags was a featured item on the front page! happily, i snapped this screenshot, because about 15 minutes after i did, the bag sold and it is now on its way to a new home.

reading material

ran across a fun new blog today. the librarians at the state library of victoria in australia have started "read alert" - talking about young adult lit (my favorite stuff!). i was afraid it would be all about australian authors, but i recognized lots of names while browsing through. i think it will be a fun read.

EDIT: The link to Read Alert

hooray

today is mental health day. i periodically take a day off and go do fun stuff. last time it was the red balloon bookstore and bread & chocolate. today.... i'm not sure yet. i am going in to work at 3, so i have to pay a little attention to time, but the day is mine. all of my regular blog readers have probably abandoned me by this time, since my posts have been so few and far between, but i am hoping that everything that was conspiring to keep me away is now done. i have been working on a few projects in the interim. i am learning to knit my first lace pattern. i ripped out the first 6 inches 9 times, but i have about 12 inches done now and it is looking not bad. it helps that i am using a beautiful yarn which is variegated turquoise and cornflower blue and pinky lavendar, which makes bands of color about 3 inches wide. the yarn is a blend of wool and soy silk, which is lovely to work with. then i have been making cuffs...

my dog ate it

canus3 (10k image)
no more snow days. back to work. today was pretty much back to normal. the sun came out for a while and it was gloriously bright and sunny. i even broke out the sunglasses. happy pi day, by the way. some friends of mine were celebrating the day by going and buying pies. i did not mention this holiday to andy. a math holiday and pie is just too much of a good thing. and speaking of food.... i have been playing around with silk cuff bracelets lately. i made one as a whim and i am enjoying them enormously. this one is a result of the snow day yesterday. i was looking for quotes and proverbs and came up with "canus meus id comedit" or "my dog ate it". it is made from "reclaimed" hand-dyed silk. reclaimed, you ask? i have a basket of silk scarves in my sewing room. more than one person needs really. i decided that some of them were complete disasters as scarves, but they were marvelous when cut up in to pieces. this one is a bit from an experiment in glue resists and painted dyes. then stamped with permanent dye inks. then stitched.

snow day

according to the local news we are getting about 2 inches of snow an hour right now. that is a bonafide blizzard. it is wet and heavy and very snowy. so andy and i are both home from work today. he's doing all kinds of things on the laptop and i am dabbling in this and that. lucy is soggy and bored.

no photos

still no pictures and the laptop is once again off at a meeting where i am not. soon.

i had a lovely birthday yesterday. poor neglected blog didn't even get a lead up to that event. i left work early, got some coffee, stopped at a favorite little fabric shop and got a couple of batik prints that were calling to me, came home and read a book and then went out to dinner at our favorite french restaurant. today was even better because the sun decided to come out for once in weeks. andy and i have both been feeling the gloom once again. i think we would have happily slept until noon any day this week.

i have been away from much very crafty in the past few weeks, much to my dismay. i did a little bit over the weekend. more little doodles with thread and a couple of silk cuff bracelets while watching a band concert and the oscars. i have cleared my schedule of anything for the next couple of weekends just to give myself a chance to catch up on #1 housework (it is out of control!) and #2 de-stressing. i was going to take a class but it is just making me more stressed thinking about giving up that time, so no class.

so, with that in mind, i am going to scrub the shower and then have a hot bath.
