06/04/2007: "CONTEST!"

I have decided it would be fun to have a contest with prizes! I know I don't have many who comment, but I know those readers and lurkers are out there, so here is your chance!

The contest:
We have a pond. My mom and dad got it for us a year or so ago and we finally have it set up in a cosy little corner of the yard and it has lily pads in it. Because this is Minnesota and we are overrun with mosquitos, we got some goldfish for the pond and told them that their job is to eat mosquito larvae. We will see how they do with that. Here comes the contest part. I have named the fish : Harvey, Aloysius and Elliot. Your job is to tell me why. Answer the question "What do these names have in common?"

First prize is a funky felted bowl made with some handdyed yarn. I haven't finished it, so you can't see a picture yet. First prize goes to whoever gives me the right answer (if there is more than one, I will draw names)

Second prize goes to the most creative wrong answer. There is also a prize!

Leave a comment with your answer. Winners will be announced June 11.

Here's my guess: they're the first names of Muppet characters.
Harvey Kneeslapper
Aloysius Snuffleupagus
Elliot Shag

My mom and sister have already disqualified themselves on the account of knowing me too well. But I know there are more of you out there!

Are they the names of the mice in Cinderella?

on Wednesday, June 6th, danielle said

they're all "invisible" friends of some sort: Harvey the bunny and Elliot the dragon, but I can't place aloysius

and all this without even using google!

remember, the most creative wrong answer gets a cool prize too! Just guess!

Um, they're all bunnies?

Names which famous people changed.

1. Nick Adams was Nicholas Aloysius Adamschock
2. Larry King was Lawrence Harvey Zeiger
3. Cass Elliot was Ellen Naomi Cohen

Names of children's heroes / tv characters. Not sure about Harvey though... smile

They're all saints. and if they're not yet, then whoever's not should be made one.

They're all bosom buddies of people considered "peculiar" by those around them (even as some wild-eyed knitters are). I have an "Aloysius" replica and I'm a knitter, and those are only TWO ways I'm peculiar (I cultivate it).

I think they're Muppets. I know that's already been guessed, but I'm still going to go with it.

These are all patron saints of goldfish:

St. Elliot (a bastardization of "Elligot," from McElligot's Pool by Dr. Seuss) is the patron saint of swimming in circles. He carries a golden spiral.

St. Aloysius is the patron saint of fish food, and is known to appear hovering just over chosen goldfish ponds sprinkling little golden flakes of food, just before dusk on his Saint's Day.

St. Harvey (my personal favorite) is the patron saint of bubbles. He wears a belt made of crystal orbs. Visitors to particularly blessed goldfish ponds have reported seeing the image of St. Harvey appear on bubbles blown by the fish.

All three saints work together to keep goldfish safe, well-fed and happy.

They're all names of muppets.

Oh, I think they're all real, yet invisible friends - Aloysius (or snuffy, as most knew him), Harvey (the rabbit), and Elliot (the dragon). Aloysius is quite a name, too.

OR - they could all be names of people/places who did great anti-mosquito work.

I'd go with conquering kings like...Xerxes? Alexander?

angry, grr I agree, I think they are Muppets. smile
Are they characters from Sherlock Holmes?

An acronym for Hea, so you can holler "Hea!" at the fish as you walk by the pond.

No? Well, it did sound funnier in my head.

Google showed me a list of names of crew from the Battleship Indiana.

I think an earlier comment was on to something with the Dr. Suess angle.

How many guesses do we get?

I'm taking three.

Extras in the movie The Little Mermaid?

on Thursday, June 7th, becka said

as many guesses as you want! The most creative wrong answer also gets a prize, so really just throw in your guesses! And I will draw a name for all of the correct answers if there is more than one. So guessing the same thing as someone else is just fine. WELCOME to all of the new commenters. I feel so loved today.

I have no idea! Here's my guess...because you wanted to say "hey" to your bugs and 'hae' was just as good, so h-arvey, a-lloysius, and e-lliot. We have 5 goldfish that we got almost 6 years ago, they were tiny feeder fish from the magician then. Big honkin things now limited by the size of their 10 gal tank. There were 6, but we found the biggest hard on the floor one day. Kept it for a bit in the freezer for show and tell. A year or two ago the second biggest leaped, but we got it back in and it's still swimmin'. I tried naming them, but their colors and markings (they were never much) changed/faded. The only one that I can still name is 'stumpy' because its dorsal fin is stumpy versus the others.

These would be invisible friends of course! Harvey the 6 ft. white rabbit, Elliot, Pete's Dragon and Aloysius Snuffleupagus. Although in later Sesame Street years Mr. Snuffleupagus became visible to more than just Big Bird and the viewers.

on Friday, June 8th, Heather T said

Hi - I am also going with the invisible/imaginary friends category, although in fairness, I couldn't place Aloysius until someone else metioned Snuffy.

Your prizes are very cute!

Well, I think either Miss T has it right, or you're descended from members of the crew of the battleship Indiana which fought in the Spanish American War- John HARVEY Stocks, Edward ALOYSIUS Fee, and Daniel ELLIOT. (http://www.spanamwar.com/indianacrew.htm)
