01/15/2007: "to infinity and beyond"

no days off for us today, but we did manage to sneak away in the afternoon for a rendezvous with the Rahn parents at the science museum. we all saw MARS 3D the movie, which was pretty cool. did you know that they put the mars rovers inside a raspberry-shaped balloon and it had to bounce around on the surface for 10 minutes as part of its slow-down-enough-for-landing protocol? we also sat up very high in the cafe that overlooks st paul and the river and had a nice chat. after a brisk stroll through a beautifully lit Rice Park, we had dinner at Sakura, a Japanese restaurant.

then i came home and curled up under a blanket to begin casting on The Emperor's New Scarf

mine is being knit in cherry tree hill superwash merino in java (which is really a lovely blend of brown-olive-cranberry, which you really can't see in the picture) and drops alpaca in color 7240. the picture from the pattern really doesn't do it justice. the sample i saw at the yarn shop is really very cool. i am of course using the wrong yarn size and a different size needle (with much consultation at the yarn shop) so i am keeping my fingers crossed.
