07/12/2006: "signing on"

chop (32k image)
i have been trying to come up with a way to sign some of my fiber pieces. i hate tags, but it is difficult to "sign" things. but then i thought, what about a symbol or something to represent my signature. i designed this little symbol based on a couple of different things. in college, i took two semesters of basic sign language. in sign language you often represent your name with the first initial and then something descriptive. for example, if your name is rachel and you have really long hair, you might do the sign for long hair but with your fingers in the shape of an "r". then, i have always loved illustrators that sign their work with a symbol. ww denslow, who illustrated the wizard of oz books, has my very favorite signature ever.

i also love the chinese or japanese name "stamps" called a chop or hanko. so this is my own name stamp. it includes my initial, the chinese character for "needle" and a needle and thread forming a frame around it. i have stamped all of the bags and silk cuff bracelets that i have. i went back and forth about using an "r" or a "b" on the stamp, since "r" is my real initial. i decided that since the reason i was creating this was for my etsy creations and that shop is called "beckarahn", so that i would go with b.
