01/09/2006: "auditioning the art"

auditions (170k image)
we have a members show at the art center that i am supposed to enter a piece in to. it is a non-juried show and open to anything, but i am having a hard time finding anything that i want to show. i was way too busy to contemplate making something new, so consequently i tried anyway. that is the piece on the right. the goldfish bag. although i like it, it doesn't seem finished and i am not sure what it needs. the piece on the left is one i finished in some spare minutes robbed from something else back in october. again, i like it but i don't love it. i have since learned how to do mitered corners. this piece also got some water dripped on it and i discovered the ink is not waterproof. (the center piece is printed from my computer on to fabric) i should have tested this but i didn't. arrrgh. the water spots are almost definitely only noticeable by me because i am picky, but it annoys me to know they are there. finally we have my friend the troll. he is the troll that lives under the billy goats gruff bridge. i made him back in vermillion, i think. it has been a while. i pulled him out and give him a little tlc today (including a nose job!), added a few things and spruced him up a bit. i adore him, but... but i don't know exactly.

the goldfish need a bottom to their pond/bowl.......gravel..sand....something to define their house as a house and the ocean...

When I needed photos on fabric for a quilt, I bought printable fabric, but could never find permanent inks. Do any exist? I ended up going to a print shop and having them print on my fabric. Very frustrating!

i have heard that it depends on your printer and the kind of ink that it uses. some are supposed to be permanent. but nobody seems to know which are or aren't. i also heard that there is something that you can treat the fabric with to make the ink permanent, but i haven't investigated that yet.

I agree with Bess and it may be interesting to do something with beads to make the sand, but that would be pretty labor intensive.

I think the troll is my favorite. It sort of reminds me of fraggle rock which I loved as a child.

i thought the same thing - beads would be great but not necessarily worth the time. i am thinking of doing some machine "embroidery". major amounts of stitching scribbles in many shades of sandy colors and then maybe add a few beads on top.
