10/23/2005: "art wear"

before (17k image)
this weekend was a big event at the art center where i work. we have an annual runway show of wearable art with about 50 designers. it is a big deal and more fun than i expected it to be. this year's theme was vintage-inspired fashion (my favorite). since everyone dresses up for the event, i needed an outfit. a friend gave me a bunch of vintage dresses this summer. she was doing some closet cleaning and thought some would fit me. i haven't done much except keep them in a laundry basket in my sewing room for the past few months, so i grabbed the basket and started trying things on. i pulled out the dress seen above. it had some potential but i really dislike white clothes, and it had a lot of white. so wednesday afternoon, i dunked it in a trash can full of dye - emerald green, turquoise and black. i stirred it once in a while and finally pulled it out, washed it and found that the dress was now a lovely aqua color. it still needed a little something, so i started digging through my ribbon, thinking of putting a stripe around the hem of pink or black. then i discovered the $1 spool of black polkadotted grossgrain ribbon that i bought months ago. you can see the result...
