11/19/2004: "Illustration Friday: Regal"

regal (33k image)
this one was hard. i went through ideas and sketches and nothing was right. i tried a snowy owl. i tried great danes. i kept getting images of crowns in my head. then i thought of a picture that my dad gave me of my great-grandma as "queen of the ball". i hate drawing people. i think it is about 20 times harder than anything else. so i drew from my remembered impression of the picture... i like what i got.

big grin She is very lovely and I think you did a very good job at drawing a person. Love the banner, too.

I agree with you, drawing people is much harder than anything else... and then you drew this from "remembered impression"? It is fantastic. What a great illustration.

Iremember the day that Great Grandma Cora was the Queen of the Ball. I think she would be very proud of you.

thanks!

i know "remembered impression" is a goofy phrase, but it fit. i didn't remember the actual picture but just the idea of the picture - what it represented. i draw like that a lot. more like what i think a rabbit looks like, than actually what a rabbit looks like. after i finished drawing, i found the picture and had a good look at it.
