I then put the litter bag into a plastic bag which I tied shut and put the package on the porch. I also kept the receipt but because the litter was still spilling out during handling, I wasn't going to put my health in further jeopardy by attempting to return it to the store. (Later, it ended up in the trash bin).

In the meantime, I was afraid that if I emptied the litter out of the litter box, that the fiber dust would fly about making the off-gassing worse so I emptied a box of baking soda in and when that wasn't enough to contain the problem I planned to go to another store.

I put the litter box in a room I didn't plan to use much and turned on a small air purifier. Regardless, the off-gassing had increased and I could smell it just by approaching the room.

Fortunately, at the other store they had a corn fiber cat litter that stated on the back of the package, "It controls odors without the need for perfumes and scents, which some cats don't like..."

I poured some on top of the other litter. The toxic litter still off-gassed though. The air purifier ran for days and I still suffered in and around that area for a long while. Eventually I was able to clean the entire box and just use the new litter.

The new litter I'd purposely smelled right from the bag and knew immediately there was no "bite" and it would be okay. Also, the top on this litter is easier to close. I was able to put a twist tie on it.

The safe litter is called World's Best Cat Litter and it really is "All Natural." I bought it in the Midwest where we grow corn but if you'd like more information, you may contact:
