Buckley reading the Gospel during Mass at the Chapel of Our Savior, January 14, 2011 On Saturday, February 4th we'll have our rehearsal for February's Mass, and we will sing at the Mass at the Chapel of Our Savior on Friday, February 10th. Although this is the memorial of St. Scholastica in the calendar, we will celebrate a votive Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin. This is a change from the Graduals we've been using, so please download the chants here. ![]() Friday TLMs with choir at Chapel of Our Savior
Our schola sings at the TLM offered by the Friars of the Atonement on the second Friday of the month from October through April. We rehearse on the Saturday prior to the 2nd Friday, at the Chapel of Our Savior. Many thanks to Father James O'Driscoll of Holy Family parish, Rockland who celebrated Mass on February 11th for the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Two snippets of the choir singing, of the Introit antiphon and the Ambrosian Gloria, are available. Music at Sacred Heart, MiddleboroAs many of you may already know, Fr. Worthley has been transferred to serve as a pastoral associate at St. Catherine of Genoa parish in Somerville. As far as I know, this will mean that there will no longer be any Traditional Latin Masses celebrated at Sacred Heart; but I will let you know if anything changes. December 19, 2010 The SSGC Schola sang at Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent at Sacred Heart, Middleborough. We were happy to have Steve Tinkham assist us by playing organ for our entrance and recessional hymns, while Bridgette, the usual organist for the TLM at Sacred Heart was away for the day. Many thanks to John Salisbury from the Schola Amicorum at Holy Cross Cathedral who lead the schola for the feast of Corpus Christi, and to Fr. Worthley for making possible this celebration of the Lord's gift of the Blessed Sacrament and the opportunity to participate in a traditional Corpus Christi procession. A YouTube video has been created of the procession and is embedded here: ![]() Ever since Pope Benedict XVI made celebration of the Holy Mass according to the older liturgical books more widely available to priests and people through his Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum many churches have begun celebrating Mass according to the extradordinary form of the Roman Rite. Here on the South Shore of Massachusetts, there are regular celebrations at Sacred Heart Church in Middleboro and at the Chapel of Our Savior in Brockton. On the North Shore and in Boston there are several other parishes, which you can view at the web site Latin Mass Community North. However, at present there are not enough people who are able to sing chant to form choirs for all the churches now offering the Mass in Latin according to the older Liturgical books. Even though the music of the Graduale Romanum is still the preferred music to be used in the ordinary form of the Roman Rite, it has been little used for the past 40 years. ![]() Across the U.S.A., there has been a growing appreciation for Gregorian chant, the sung prayer of the Church, and week-long classes and weekend chant intensives are offered several times per year. I wanted to do my part, having sung for several years part-time with the Schola Amicorum, now resident at Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston, and teach what I've learned. With the gracious offer of space in their chapel by the Atonement Friars who staff the Chapel of Our Savior in Brockton, we began classes on October 31, 2009, on All Hallows Eve. ![]() For questions or more info, please contact Steve Cavanaugh at steve@appleblossom.net last update: March 2, 2012 |
