Security Deposit Program
The Security Deposity program is one way you can help your poorer neighbors with the shocking increase in the cost of housing. The Society puts down a security deposit on a new apartment for a family, with the Society remaining entitled to the money, so that it may be reused when the family moves on, so that we can help another family.
As of March 1, 2008, there are some major changes to this program:
- Only families with dependent children under age 18 are eligible;
- The conference must follow-up quarterly with families that are given security deposit aid;
- In order to apply a second time for security deposit aid, the Society must have received 100% of previous security deposit back from landlord;
- There is a maximum amount that can be used by any one conference - check with the District President or Central Office staff for this amount.
In order to make the application process run as smoothly as possible, please do the following:
- Make an appointment with the person requesting a security deposit, and schedule at least 45 minutes for the visit.
- Ask the person making the request to obtain the following information ahead of time:
- Full name of Landlord;
- Address of Landlord;
- Phone number of Landlord;
- Amount of security deposit;
- Budget information (all income, regularly occuring bills, including insurance, credit debt, etc.).
- During your appointment, help the person fill out the application, and ask questions so that it is filled out completely;
- Keep in mind that processing the application and getting a check to the landlord requires a minimum of a few days; the Central Office staff work Monday through Friday, and have weekends and holidays off, so mailing in a request for funds the day before Thanksgiving for a December 1 deadline is unlikely to work.
- There are two copies of the last page of the application (the release form); give one to the person making the request and send the other along with the application to the Central office.
- If you have questions, please call Irene DeBlois, the program director, or Paul MacNeil, executive director, at the Central Archdiocesan SVDP office at (781) 344-3100.
You may download an application from this site and make as many copies as you like.
