On a moto-related note. Wind noise at cruising speed on a motorcycle. It's just as serious as blasting those Shure in-ear headphones.
Consider these OSHA (Occupational Safety Hazard Administration) regulations for workplace noise.
I use earplugs on any freeway ride or ride longer than 15 mintues. Even in the City of Chicago. Just as those anti-helmet zealots mistakenly think helmets reduce peripheral vision, earplug atheists are mistaken in thinking earplugs block out important sounds you need to hear- like tire squeal, sirens or horns.

I don't know about you but I want my ability to hear the quieter sounds that are a part of life undiminished. From the bird calls in the early morning as your prepare to sortie for a ride to the patter of rain to the soft whispers of a lover.
