| What the &*^$'s up, Gov? | | Date Created: Mar 16, 2005, 08:26 PM |
Looks like Gov. Blagojevich is proving the old adage, "never trust a politician" correct.
The Illinois Cycle Rider Training Fund is, by legislative law, protected and the money earmarked each year for the fund should not be taken just so our lawmakers can make up for sloppy budgeting.
Why?
Non-motorcyclist taxpayers don't foot the bill for this.
Most, if not all of this money comes from motorcycle owners. When we pay our $38 for our license plate sticker each year- a big chunk of that money goes into this fund.
Who does it serve?
New/novice motorcyclists trying to learn basic skills that can help keep them safe out on the mean streets. Illinois residents are entitled to FREE rider training. And the fact they are trying to strip money from this fund is just plain wrong.
Sure you can pay $300 - $400 to a private school for rider training but is that a real solution? How many people are going to try to learn by themselves or via unqualified instruction by friends & family? How many might potentially get hurt because of it?
Please consider taking some time to call/contact your state rep. and tell them this is wrong and they should not take money from a protected fund.

The Illinois Cycle Rider Training Fund and the OHV Grant Fund have both been put on the Governors "sweep list". This is a list of funds that he would like to strip money from.
Every motorcyclists in the state of Illinois MUST call their state representative and senator and ask that these two funds be removed from the list. ABATE of Illinois is exploring all possible avenues of protecting these funds. We will try and keep you updated - but it is your calls that will make a difference!
782-2000 is the general number for the state house, you may call and ask to be conected with your legislators and the Governor, or you may find direct office numbers at www.ilga.gov. It is ok to leave a message with the secratary. Remember the following talking points.
- this money is not public money, it is money that comes from motorcyclists only
- motorcycle rider training reduces accidents by 45% according to NHTSA
- A temporary restraining order has been issued by an Illinois Circuit Court, because the judge has already determined that taking from this type of fund is probably illegal.
Good Luck and keep your motor's running....
