MSF ERC Certified + Suspension for a Mortal-ized

I spent my weekend getting MSF Experienced RiderCourse instructor certified... and getting help setting up the 749S' suspension set up according to Max (thanks Jeff!).

First things first. The MSF ERC certification was something I mainly wanted to do for myself. There aren't many ERC classes each season so it isn't really because I wanted to teach it. Just another certificate to have to my name and another way for me to contribute to a program that gave me a foundation in proper "ridecract" (i.e., being a safer rider). It was an enjoyable experience (nice weather + on a motorcycle = enjoyable).

Second, getting the 749's overly-stiff (for my 140-lb sans gear weight) suspension more dialed-in was a good thing. The bike would be fine at a trackday pace on a smooth road course but reality is, the majority of the miles on the Ducati are on the mean streets. And the public roadways in Illinois can be pretty mean what with potholes, frost heaves, haphazard patches, seams and chunks of tarmac missing.

The bike is now more comfortable without any significant decrease in performance and I am now more knowledgeable about suspension setup on a bike with fully adjustable suspension like my 749. A big step considering my SV650 doesn't even have preload for the front forks...

I highly recommend the reference I used for this: Traxxion Dynamics Max McAllister's "Suspension for Mortals". Available in booklet, VHS & DVD.

All in all, a pretty decent weekend.
