It coulda been worse
Last night I cleaned out the battery well. There’s actually not that much metal corrosion. I scraped out the decayed chunks of tar board and vacuumed up all the dirt and rust and white battery residue, and what remains looks sound - just surface rust.
The hole I spoke of earlier turns out to have been drilled, not corroded. I’m not sure why. If it’s for a battery hold-down there should have been two of them. And the reason it’s sagging is because apparently the Ghia was backed up over something that caught the pan and bent it a little.
Now I’m thinking about the trouble and expense involved with taking off the body and doing a ground-up restoration. I don’t think it’s all that urgent, and I’m eager to get the car to a driveable state. I can do the body-off restore some other year.
