Emmanuel in the Night | |||||||||||||||
Dear all, I was greeted with 26 emails when I returned home from the hospital, and the room glowed from the brightness of their light. Thank you all. One email, a week ago or so, reminded me of a sermon I preached, in which I told a tale about Bill. It had to do with a night not long after we were married, in which Bill, who had vivid dreams, suddenly sat up straight in bed, threw his arms out wide, and cried out "The Lord be with you!" I wasn't used to having anybody with me in the night, let alone the Lord, and so I settled him back under the covers saying, "And also with you, dear, now go back to sleep." I hadn't thought about that story for years, and it brought a smile to my lips, as well as comfort to my soul. I feel as if we are in a night, of sorts, and yet, well, Emmanuel. The Lord is with us. I am also certain that the Lord is with Bill now, which gives me comfort. I miss him greatly. Karl is much perkier today, a huge relief to me, because he was so terribly lethargic when I left last night. The more the doctors consider the symptoms that Karl has been exhibiting, the more they feel that we know now the problem, and, by God's grace, the solution. The surgery is scheduled tomorrow at 11:00, and ought not last too long. Please, if you have a moment in the morning/early afternoon hours, pray for the doctors, the nurses, and, of course, for Karl. I can hardly wait to see what the results will be of this surgery. I am not expecting now a full recovery, of course, but at least I can be assured that my sweet boy Karl will not be so ill any more. Poor thing, to think of all the times I scolded him for not eating more! The results of the GI study were that his system is very slow, but there is no structural reason for it. Hmmm. Hopefully more specifics tomorrow. People are taking care of us here, as usual. A daughter of an Augustana staff and faculty couple wrapped all of our presents for us today, and another colleague and her husband brought to the hospital Kentucky Fried Chicken Chicken Pot Pies, sold only on Wednesdays. Mighty good. Good news that the Food Brigade, a group of Augie folk, will be continuing to bring us food every other day, into the new year. Many thanks to them. Karl's teachers stopped by to check on him, and others have volunteered to look after baby girl Else tomorrow. We are well cared for. And my minivan arrived, and could be parked in front of my home tomorrow. Did I mention that it is green, Karl's favorite color? He grinned when I told him that it was here and green. Now about that green dog that he wants.... And speaking of dogs, Else is just fine, but looks like Spot the dog, after having a run-in with a cup from a cup and saucer play set at her day care (please don't ask me how). She now has a ring around her eye, but the colors of red and green are showing up, and will fit the season nicely in two days. More tomorrow. God is good. The Lord be with you. Anna |
