A Note from Dave and Ann Preus |
Karl surprised me with his mental alertness and attentiveness, his good spirit, good humor, and his ability to follow whatever was going on. Even though Anna had kept us posted of his day by day improvements I came to Sioux Falls expecting the worst.
Karl's smile is especially winning. Mostly Karl's face is quite mobile. When he smiles, or even laughs, it is a delight. It is also apparent that his smiles are responses to the initiatives of others.
Clearly Karl is a captive within his body. His responses, his eyes, tell you that much more is going on in his mind than he is able to express with his body. I now understand Anna's enthusiasm at each small advance in his motor ability. It has to be frustrating for a little boy not to be able to express himself either by speech or by physical activity. I came away hopeful that Karl will keep inching along until suddenly his improvement gains speed. From a comatose seven weeks to where Karl is now gives great encouragement for his future well-being. We have been constant in prayer for Karl. It will be even more impelling to do so now that we have been with him. Anna's strength of faith, body, and spirit is surely inspiring to Karl, and is surely inspiring to us. Soli Deo Gloria!
