Shine bright the sun!

Dear all,

Yesterday not only all those surrounding Karl saw the light brightening, but so did Karl! Two nurses came into the room with mischievous smiles on their faces, and told me to get on my shoes, we were all going for a stroll. Then they lifted Karl out of his bed, onto a padded wheelchair, and rolled the little boy outside into the sunshine. Such good medicine! One month to the day since the accident, and Karl finally got to breathe in fresh air.

Not only that, but he can breathe very well. Today the doctor said there is no more mucous in his lungs. Thanks be to God.

On top of that, yesterday he coughed and swallowed for all to hear and see. He has good taste, because he rejected lime jello (he'll never make it in SD), opting instead for a subtle lemon cream cake coming from the finest bakery in Regensburg! I put the cream on his finger, and Karl let me bring it to his lips. Smacks were heard throughout the unit!

The news for which I am asking for prayer is that it seems that on Tuesday they will operate to reattach his skull. This is a big deal. The operation will last a long time, and there is no guarantee that his bones, which as I mentioned earlier were frozen, will work. If not, they will have to use a plastic substitute, which will mean that Karl will need more operations later to allow for the growth of his head. Because the wounds are large, there will be a lot of blood loss, and he will most likely need transfusions (God bless all who donate blood). There are always risks, and this procedure is made even riskier because they will thread a tube just under his skin from his head, down his neck, down into his abdomen, to drain fluid. The fluid is lessening, however (yesterday they did not need to drain it at all), and the procedure will reduce any remaining pressure on his brain which may be yet affecting Karl's ability to communicate.

Little girl Else is doing wonderfully, chipper as always, usually until, oh, about midnight, one o'clock. For a woman who would happily go to bed at 9:30 and wake up at 4:00 a.m. to begin my day, well, God bless my Miss Bright Eyes even in the wee hours. She makes me smile even through my bleary gaze. She has also grown two bottom teeth and one on top in the last month, and has begun to crawl. What a keeper! The medical staff think so too. Sometimes Else just disappears for a while, and I simply have to trust that someone, somewhere, has her playing with swabs and tongue depressors!

Lots going on. As always, your prayers are appreciated more than any of you know. I pray for each of you as well.

In peace,

Anna
