Even the Darkness is Not Dark to You

Dear Friends,

A short word to all of you from Anna and Karl and Little Else--via "Opa." A psalmist has it, "Yours is the day, yours also the night..." All of us have had a pretty difficult time of it in the last couple of weeks of keeping days and nights straight--for sure, Karl. Today it was a bit easier because Karl's "day" in several important respects went a bit better--and the night was held at bay. For a few hours he was removed from all of his medications and his ventilator. His body relaxed. His limbs moved. He was given (with a coordinated effort by several nurses and a doctor) to Anna to hold on top of her as she lay in bed. It was wonderful to see! Upon his return to his own bed and rejoining his tubes and bells and whistles, he briefly opened his eyes for the first time. It took about everything Karl had in him--but he did it. Not only did Karl's "night" become a fleeting "day," so too ours as we stood watch.

All know that the darkness is not easily held at bay, however. Darkness always seeks to push back the light and claim its full due. Karl continues to battle with serious pneumonia and infection. His lungs need clear breath. Your prayers are coveted.

We were sure that you would like to know so that you can share a tiny bit of light shining a whole bunch of darkness, a bit of "day" pushing back a lot of "night." It looks like the biblical writer had it straight--"Even the darkness is not dark to you, O Lord."

Nobody here has forgotten the Gospel writer either. It looks like he had it straight as well! "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it."

Grace and peace,

Anna, Karl, Little Else, Opa and Oma, and (all the way from Alaska) Auntie Else
