This UC Berkeley Protest was part of the  UC-wide action endorsed by the Student Union Assembly representing all campuses.  This will be the largest unified action, perhaps in the history of the UCs.  It is first and foremost in defense of PUBLIC education, then in support of Shared Governance (in which faculty and students, but especially faculty) are allowed to actually influence policy and decisions. Third, it is in support of all union demands for negotiations, and contracts. These are not in order of importance other than the first one about funding public education. Many different actions are being planned. On campuses where Thursday is the first day of classes many faculty will hold brief classes and then develop a kind of teach-in discussion about the issues.
