Jazz mentor and buddy Ko
TORONTO
This
is my buddy Ko, we met at work circa 1984 where he used to mentor me on
engineering regarding antiquated telephony signalling systems which were still
in use in parts of the world. But we quickly discovered that Ko and I had not
one but three common interests: Photography, Jazz and Travel.
He has lived and travelled in all sorts
of places like Turkey, China and Japan but the thing that got us to be close
friends was the love for jazz, and the love for Leica cameras. Ko has been a
jazz aficionado since the early sixties which is when it all happened. Since
then has amassed thousands of Jazz vinyl records, tapes and CDs. So, naturally,
he became my mentor for jazz music appreciation, something I have always
cherished.
Once a year, around boxing
day, we rendezvous for a shopping spree in Toronto and must we not make stops at
Henry's camera shop and the jazz sections of Sam the Recordman and HMV? Followed
by dinner at a jazz bar (if I am not jet lagged and falling
asleep).
Ko happens to also be infamous
for his un-ending repertoire of corny jokes, although in recent years, since he
retired, his repertoire of jokes has increased vastly and it is always good when
you start your work day reading one of his emails, failing to suppress a loud
laugh at the
office.
