Is Hong Kong losing it's soul?
HONG KONG
I
think this view of Yau Ma Tei really exemplifies the essence of Hong Kong's
constant renewal where old architecture has to give way to the new. The
beautiful rounded corners of the old "Chinese buildings" are a distinct mark of
Hong Kong but sadly, they are disappearing. The value of property is so high
that financially it makes more sense to destroy such buildings and replace them
with steel and glass monstrosities such as the domed building in the background.
The rounded corners are an architectural feature that is unique and interesting
because they didn't come about due to aesthetic considerations but rather out of
cultural reasons. According to Fung Shui edict, rounded soft corners are better,
sharp ones only help concentrate and point bad
energy.
It is these changes that are
making Hong Kong lose it's character, it's identity as it slowly turns into just
another mega city like most of its sisters in the mainland. Is Hong Kong slowly
losing its soul? Is this progress?
