Pottinger Street
One little oddity about Central in Hong Kong
is old Pottinger Street. For some reason, the authorities have decided to leave
the original stone slab "steps" there, instead of having them paved over. It was
probably the original pedestrian street and the stone steps must be the oldest
in Hong Kong. A hundred years ago, you could hire a sedan chair to take you up
the steep street.
Pottinger street was
known for the colourful small shops and stalls that sell everything from buttons
to clothes and all manner of
knickknacks.
In recent years, a number of
very trendy bars have started appearing on Pottinger and at night it becomes
abuzz with party goers and pub crawlers offering a stop halfway between Lan
Kwai Fong and SoHo. The difference between these clubs and LKF or SoHo is that
they are usually extremely small in size, have cutting edge interior design and
contract the most avant-garde D.J.s in
town.
