2nd Generation
The first location I can trace the family to is West Calder, Midlothian. West Calder lies 16 miles south-west of Edinburgh. It was an important centre in the 19th century for oil shale. William Brown was a shale miner. They lived in an area referred to as Happy Lands, which was an area of West Calder which sprung up to accomodate the shale miner's and their families.
William Brown married Annie Whyte in 1871 in West Calder. Annie was born circa 1852 in Bathgate, her parent's were Robert Whyte and Mary Millar. William and Annie had 8 children.

William married Janet Arbuckle in 1903 in Rutherglen. Janet was born in 1872 in Rutherglen, her parent's were Peter Arbuckle and Catherine Simpson. William and Janet had 4 children:

James married Annie Martin in 1907 in Rutherglen. Annie was born circa 1879, her parents were Alexander Martin and Elizabeth Cook.
Thomas married Lizzie Martin in 1904 in Rutherglen. Lizzie was born circa 1882 her parent's were Alexander Martin and Elizabeth Cook.
4th Generation
Catherine married William Dick in 1926 in Rutherglen. William was born circa 1906 his parents were William Dick and Elizabeth Gailey.
Peter married Elizabeth McEwan in 1931 in Rutherglen. Elizabeth was born in 1913 in Rutherglen, her parent's were John McEwan and Martha Burgoyne. Peter and Elizabeth had 5 children:
